GEM (Girls Excel in Math)

Girls Excel in Math (GEM) is a program sponsored by the University of Minnesota that aims to establish and support a community of 4th through 7th grade metro-area girls who are interested in math. The GEM program strives to forming lasting friendships and strong student-mentor bonds between students and their teachers, as research shows that when girls spend time with other girls who enjoy challenging math activities, it reinforces a their own pleasure in and enthusiasm for the subject.

At Garlough, GEM is coordinated by Principal Sue Powell. Events are held from November-April on the University of Minnesota campus. Contact Principal Powell for details and information about becoming involved at 651-403-8100 or susan.powell@isd197.org.
